Costume jewelry may be made with a base metal that is plated with a thin coat of silver or gold. It may also be composed of inexpensive metal, plastic, or natural materials like shells and wood.

Synthetic or imitation gems may be set on a piece of jewelry by fixing it on the surface of the metal or attaching it as a dangling decor. Some jewelry is composed mainly of stones and the metal is used only as a framework. Gems or other materials can be pierced and strung together like beads.
