Making Jewelry

Jewelries are items made of or adorned with different materials such as a polished gemstone or smoothly finished metals that are worn by many women. The most usual jewelry pieces such as necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, brooches, and anklets are all purely ornamental in purpose. More useful items that may be categorized as jewelry are buttons, buckles, and watches.

Though most jewelry is worn for decorative reason, other people wear them to indicate rank, membership in an organization, or for symbolic reasons. Examples of these are the king’s crown, a fraternity pin, and a birthstone.

Some jewelry is made from precious minerals and real gems that on their own have intricate value. That is why most jewelry is very expensive due to the extreme value added by these materials. Costume jewelry is a cheaper version of real jewelry that are produced in large quantities and only used for decorative effect.

Expensive jewelry is made mostly of gold and is adorned with gems of platinum or palladium which are stronger and able to hold stones tightly. Costume jewelry may be made with a base metal that is plated with a thin coat of silver or gold. It may also be composed of inexpensive metal, plastic, or natural materials like shells and wood.

Synthetic or imitation gems may be set on a piece of jewelry by fixing it on the surface of the metal or attaching it as a dangling decor. Some jewelry is composed mainly of stones and the metal is used only as a framework. Gems or other materials can be pierced and strung together like beads.
